Easy Halloween Skull using Ultra Wear Foundation Sticks!

With Halloween nearly upon us I thought I would share with you a Halloween look using only 5 different types of products and no fake blood needed!
This look would be perfect for anyone who hasn’t got any ‘special effects make-up’ at home, so needs to use their everyday make-up bag to achieve a Halloween look!

Products I used:
– Lancome Foundation Sticks in shades 005, 032, 055 & 16
– Lancome Le Crayon Kohl (Noir) – Black Pencil
– Lancome Mr Big Permanent Marker (Noir)
– Lancome Grandiose Liner (Noir) – Black Liquid Liner
– Lancome Grandiose Mascara – Black Mascara
– Lancome Black Eyeshadow from Hypnose Eyeshadow Palette (Brun Adore)

  1. I prepped my skin using Lancome’s Advanced Genifique with Light Pearl Eye Serum and a little bit of Absolue Precious Cells Day Cream, after cleansing and toning.
  2. I then moved on to the main base colour using the Lancome Ultra Wear Foundation stick all over which matched my skin tone (005). I applied this using the short handled angled brush also by Lancome and worked it onto the skin achieving a medium coverage, with no concealer.
  3. Next I used the Lancome Foundation Stick in shade 032, and mapped out the ‘Skull’ shape by creating sunken in cheek bones and forehead. I used a small flat brush to apply and blended this into the skin using downward striped motions, so no harsh edges were noticeable and the colour faded from 032 to 005 seamlessly.
  4. Then I used shade 055 in the same Lancome  Ultra Wear Stick and went over this shape further to create more depth. I applied the 055 to my jaw line and created the shape of the heavy angry brows. A good tip to create this effect is to frown normally and run a thin brush in between the frown line wrinkles and then relax the face and blend following the shape you have already created using a small fluffy brush with light pressure.
  5. Once I had finished adding depth with 055, I moved on to the darkest shade to create more depth by using shade 16. I used a very light hand for this and a fluffy brush I found taking the product on to the brush for the stick worked better than using the stick straight onto the skin, as I lost precision when I tried it straight from the stick.
  6. At this point I moved onto creating the dark eyes and the mouth. I started by applying Lancome’s Le Crayon Kohl Pencil in Black to the top and bottom waterlines of both eyes. I then followed my own natural eye socket shape by feeling for the socket bone around my eye and created the suitable shape. Le Crayon Kohl Pencil worked perfectly as it glided over the foundation so easily and didn’t pull or drag my skin when I applied it.
I then used the same pencil to map the lines around the mouth area which you can see pictured.
  7. I then swapped the kohl pencil for the Mr Big Permanent Marker again by Lancome to colour in the circles around the eyes, for speed and depth. I’m sure you are aware if you have had a play using the Mr Big Permanent Marker, you will have experience the Marker does have a tendency to stick, so to help prevent this I used a black eye shadow from one of the Hypnose Palette eye shadows and ran this all over the area I had applied the Marker, to prevent it sticking and moving and to make it a darker black.
  8. I finished the eyes of by applying a few coats of one of my favourite Lancome Mascara’s; Grandiose, on to my top and bottom lashes.
  9. I applied the Mr Big Marker to my nose as well to create the shape and used a little bit of the Lancome Grandiose Liner neaten and create a precise sharper finish.
  10. I felt at the point the rest of the make-up looked a little bit ‘too clean’ so I used a very light hand with the kohl pencil and created small thin wobbly lines to create a vein type look to some areas of the face and used my ring finger to blend it into the skin to soften the look.

Let me know if you give this a go, or link below your own Halloween tutorials I’d love to see them!

The Packaging?
The packaging is lovely in my opinion, really fun and really cute. You are bound to get a lot of questions from your friends as soon as you pull this out of your make-up bag for a on-the-go top up.
The Lancome shakers are designed to look like mini cocktail shakers, however these are made from plastic, so there wont be any spillages in the bag from these!
I love how the black glossy lid, is a clear visual to distinguish the different texture to the Juicy Shakers also buy Lancome.

What is the applicator like?
There’s no other lip product on the market to date which has this unique cushion applicator, except from Lancome’s own Juicy Shakers!
Its quite a wide domed cushion, with a point which allows for quick application and accuracy. It’s surprisingly so easy to use despite my first initial ‘that’s going to go everywhere’ thoughts, I think this is due to the pointed applicator and the outter shaker style lid, it allows for a firm grip and easy to manoeuvre.

IMG_2299 (2)

Does the product bleed/ run?
Not at all! This product is the best liquid lip I’ve found for colour pay off and for staying put. Due to its incredibly light ‘wet’ texture, it definitely covers the lip as a second skin effect, there fore does not bleed. Those of you who were familiar with Lancome’s old L’absolu Velvets, they had the tendency to bleed, due to the thick creamy texture however these stay put, meaning you can eat and drink in confidence. Perfect for date night!

How long does the product stay on for?
These last all day! I usually put these on around 8 am in the morning and usually get home around 6pm and they haven’t budge all day and they look just as good as when I initially left the house. I do like to give a quick top up after I’ve eaten, even though I could get away without (Bonus!) I think its just habit for me. I usually have to use my Bifacil eye make-up remover to get the bulk off before bed. These truly have the most amazing staying power.

Is the product suitable for dry lips?
Yes! I thought these may dry my lips out, however they don’t, again I feel this is because of the feather light texture. If you have really dry lips you can always apply a bit of lip balm before applying the shakers, the Renergie lip balm works perfectly for this I’ve found as its a nice light lip balm so doesn’t interfere the matte shakers, colour pay off or texture.

Tips & Tricks?
Get the product going quicker by shaking your shaker upside down! You will need to shake for every use due to the oil and pigment created in the product, oil has the tendency to separate when left.
Use the applicator in your favour! If you are wanting a bright punchy bold colour, use lots of small light dabbing motions over the lip to build the colour using the pointed end of the applicator.
If you want a sheer, wash of colour or a ‘just bitten’ type of colour, you are best to swipe the cushion applicator over the lip, using the rounded flat side of the cushion. This means not as much pressure is going onto the cushion for the product to release a lot of product.

Creative Lines – Eye Liner Style.

Liner, Liner, Liner.

How many of us get stuck in a rut when it comes to applying beautiful eye liner? Any of who know me will definitely know I love a good winged liner!

I thought today I would shake things up and share with you some creative ways you can apply your liner, scroll for tips and tricks for nailing your preferred liner…

Lancome Liner

Upturned: Your eyes have a natural upwards lift at the outer corner of the eye, you have visible lid space. To keep your eyes looking symmetrical and balanced a good tip would be making sure you apply liner on the top and underneath and mirror this.
Think: Angelina Jolie

Round: Your eyes are beautifully big and round. You have more ‘whites’ are your eyes visible than other eye shapes.
Think: Penelope Cruz

Monolid: You have a small eye shape with a less defined eye socket. This eye shape is very common in Asian Eyes. Bold liner is your perfect match for your eye shape!
Think: Sandra Oh

Downturned: You have a slight natural drop on the outer edge of your eye. Your eye shape is perfect for a lot of liner styles – especially the feline liner!
Think: Anne Hathaway

Hooded: Your eyes have a fold in the skin which gently rests on the lower part of the eye lid. The best liner for you is the hooded winged liner, symmetrical lines work best for you!
Think: Blake Lively

Liner Looks

Bold Liner
IMG_1799 (3)
I love this liner look, its definitely those for the brave who feel confident wearing a bold statement eye, straight from the runway!
This liner style is perfect for those of you who have a ‘monolid’!
I recommend starting from the inner corner and using your natural crease as a guide to follow. Then lifting the liner from the couter corner and perfecting into one smooth effortless line. You will need the Kohl Liner in your waterline for this one, for extra definition.

Feline Flick

IMG_0102 (3)My go to liner everyday! This is super quick and easy to do, brilliant for all eye shapes, but especially flattering for those of you who have a down turned eye.
I apply this liner by starting on the inner corner and lining my top lash line. I then like to use my bottom lash line as a guide to follow to know the angle of the flick. I then draw this line in and create a triangle shape and fill this in, so the wing has been made and soften the sharp triangle shape by creating a nice wing.

Bubble Liner

IMG_1294 (2)This is a super fun take on the feline flick liner and will definitely get people asking you about your liner in store! I like to map out a feline flick liner, as above and then create the ‘half moon’ shapes along the lash line. I have decorated mine with the Lancome Grandiose Blue Liner to enhance the bubble shape.

Cut Crease Liner

IMG_1754 (2)

Definitely more for the brave hearted! I’ve done this slighty over exaggerated and thicker than I would wear on counter so you can see the shape better. This works for the majority of eye shapes, but everyone’ s will look different due to the shape/ size of the eye! I recommend starting on the outside creating the line to go up and then connect the crease line by following your natural socket shape. This is one for when you have a few more minutes on hand!

Dotty Liner

IMG_1757 (2)
This is THE PERFECT Liner for those who want to wear liner, but cant master the neat ‘flick’, dot your way to creativity! Looks like you’ve spent ages on this, but takes about 30 seconds, go to liner when in a hurry believe it or not! Again I’ve used 2 colours to wear up the dots and to add interest – everyone should try this one!

Double Liner

IMG_1773 (2)This works great for a hooded eye! This looks amazing too when you just apply the liner to the bottom lash line and leave the top lash line bare!

Ombre Liner

IMG_1789 (2)Want to get creative and boost liner sales? Try this one, the Ombre Liner!
The Grandiose Liners blend amazingly together creating a dark navy colour too, which looks lovely to wear as one. Layer the black liner first, with the blue on top, if the electric sapphire colour is a little too bright for you.

Let me know if you try any of these looks out below, or tweet or tag me in your looks. My handle is @ruthbrabinermua

The Highlighters You NEED.

Now with the Summer months approaching here! I thought you may want to see my favourite highlighting products to help give you that beautiful radiant sheen in the summer months.
I’m not sure about you but I’m a sucker for all things glowy, ‘sheeny’ and radiant looking. I love how they instantly help to make me look I’ve had 12 hours of sleep, I have the worlds best skin and to cheat that I eat my 5 portions of fruit and veg a day. Lolz.

Who doesn’t love a good highlight?

Best Highlighting Product for a Skincare Lover:
Advanced Genifique Youth Activating Concerntrate

I’m kicking off with more of a skincare care treatment product. This is a serum so you need to use it everyday, the more you use it the more it will benefit your skin. It’s more of a long term permanent investment more than a cheaper quick fix ‘fake it’ product, hence the price tag at £59. BUT it’s so worth it.

Meet Lancome’s Advanced Genifique.

IMG_1722 (2)

I’ve been a HUGE fan of this product for about nearly 4 years now and used it almost every day since.
I apply this product every morning after I have applied my toner before my moisturiser. I’ve noticed it has really helped to improve the bright appearance of my skin, by making it looking brighter, fresher, more even toned and clearer. It also makes my skin smoother and softer. It works amazingly on a morning to give that fresh bright glow, without leaving the skin feeling greasy, oily or sticky. Its a clear formula which sinks into the skin straight away not leaving any residue or film. The perfect serum in my opinion!

It also works AMAZINGLY mixing it into a liquid foundation which already gives a nice healthy glow, to double the impact – making the skin look flawless!
Available to purchase here at £59 – £94, depending on preferred size.

Best Highlight for Dark Skin:
MAC Lustre Drops

IMG_1724 (2)

If you were wanting more of a an instant result and have more of an olive to dark skin. If you have a paler skin, I wouldn’t recommend so much, as the gold is incredible gold and ‘orange toned’. The MAC Liquid Lustre Drops in ‘Gold’ are stunning. You only get a small amount of product (18ml) but these are incredibly pigmented. Again you can use these on top of foundation for the high point of the face or mix it into foundation. I prefer to apply onto of the foundation as I feel its more noticeable and using a duo fibre brush I feel works well to gently buff the product into the skin without breaking down the base product, as they are very runny.
Available to purchase here at £18.

IMG_1733 (2).JPG

Winning Highlight for Multi-Purpose use:
MAC Strobe

IMG_1723 (2)

Another brilliant product by MAC which I cant go on a job without is MAC Strobe Liquid Lotion – original shade.

This stuff is amazing! So multi purpose!
You can either use it as a moisturiser base, before foundation, you can mix it with your foundation to lighten it a tiny bit and add a lovely radiance or you can just apply to the high point of the face. Again like the previous MAC product I think it works best to buff it into the skin lightly with a duo fibre blending brush. You can use your fingers with this product but I’ve find it just gets absolutely everywhere and feels like such a waste.
This product has lasted me 3 years – such an investment as a small amount goes along way as its so pearlised. Now MAC have launched some more shades to there collection to get the perfect colour glow you would like ranging from the original (pink) to red, gold, silver, you really should go into mac and swatch. I love the red toned one – which is surprising as the same does sound scarily awful. Its personal preference but I really recommend checking the strobe cream out if you’re wanting a higher end quick fix highlighter that multi purpose!
– Note: Mines the Lotion, I’m not sure if this is still available to purchase, but the lotion is just a tiny bit thinner than the cream, if you’re confused by the name.
Available here at £25.

IMG_1736 (2)

IMG_1737 (2).JPG

Best Photographic Highlight:
Illamasqua Gleam

IMG_1717 (2)

Another kit favourite of mine is the Illamasqua Cream Gleam Highlighters in ‘Aurora’ and they do a darker shade in ‘Supernatural’ which I also have in my kit, which is more of a coppery bronzed shade rather than a yellow toned gold in comparison to the MAC Lustre Drops.
Be aware though that you do need to use these sparingly, as they can go a little bit ‘patchy and bitty’ if you use too much on the skin. But they photograph is seamless, so stunning, a really instagram pop of highlight, so soft, satiny but bright and reflective.
I find they only work by patting onto of base product, I don’t feel like they come through if you were to apply before a base product. In my time of using them also I’ve found they work best being warmed on the back of the hand before being patted onto the skin using my ring finger. I wouldn’t recommend a ‘rubbing’ circular motion to work this into the skin, as with the texture its quite thick to needs to be gently manipulated into the skin. If you go into store I suggest swatching this first before buying, so you can feel the texture if it would work for yourself. To me the texture isn’t completely desireable, but I love it because the results it gives.
Available here at £25.

Top Budget Highlight under £5:
MUA ‘Undress Your Skin’ Powder Highlight

I am obsessed with these, if you dont own at least one, where have you been. You need to go purchase one and thank me later. You can thank me for introducing you to a super duper cheap life changing powder which will give you compliments to the high heavens every time you wear it.
I own the Iridescent Gold, Pink Shimmer & Peach Shimmer. Hands down all are flawless and beautiful for the price, they give intense colour pay off and such a beautiful sheen on the skin. Apply so easy and are so buildable, they dont apply patchy nor do they looks too cheap or too sparkly with huge chunks of glitter.
My first one was the pink shimmer, and I get SO MANY compliments I cant even tell you when I wear this. I wore this to work once, and after 45 minutes the girl went on her break to go and buy it as  she couldn’t stop staring at the glow haha! Its also been referred to as a ‘unicorn’ highlight too, its incredible. You will love.

Top 5 Blushers for Summer

FullSizeRender (6)

With the weather getting warmer well actually more brighter let say, I thought I would share with you my top 5 blushers I think are worth checking out this summer!

First up, meet the Lancome Blush Subtil in shade ‘030 Eclat de Corail’ available to purchase here and is priced at £29.50.

IMG_1577 (2)

IMG_1602

IMG_1606 (2)

This Lancome blush has become the blusher I reached for recently on a day to day basis. It works so well with all makeup looks and gives a beautiful radiance to the skin as well, but not glittery and not ‘in your face’ very subtil and pretty.
This blush works well on the majority of skin tones, it looks incredible if you have a beautiful olive skin too. However if your skin is darker than medium/olive I would recommend you try this blusher on in store, before buying just to make sure its definitely one for you.

Second up, is MAC Sheertone Blush in ‘Springsheen’ Which is available here and is priced at £19.50.IMG_1582 (2)

IMG_1600

IMG_1601 (2)

I remember purchasing this blush as I didn’t have a peachy shimmery one in my kit and I needed one for a an upcoming shoot I had. This blush gives an incredibly natural finish, its not the most noticeable on the skin, its very sheer hence the ‘Sheertone formula’ its definitely better for a pale/ porcelain skin especially red heads – works an absolute dream!

Next is Lancome again but this time a different texture with the Cushion Blush Subtil, this is in the Shade 024 ‘Sparkling Framboise’, available here and is priced at £29.50.

IMG_1592 (2)

IMG_1614 (2)

IMG_1615 (2)

I adore this formula, I do believe these cushion formulas are easier to blend into the skin and are less likely to go patchy, due to the fresh creamy light formula. These are brilliant for a dry skin, who like to avoid powder products. These last all day on the skin and can also be used on the lips too! – Perfect on the go Blush, makes a 2-in-1!

Sticking with Lancome again is Blush Subtil in shade 011 ‘Brun Roche’ this is also priced at £29.50 and available here.

IMG_1596 (2)

IMG_1607

IMG_1609 (2)

I LOVE this blusher, its very well loved and I can almost use it as a Bronzer as I’m so pale haha! Its a great nude blush, if you want to define your cheeks and add a little bit of colour to the cheeks but dont want to introduce a new brighter colour. Gorg. Pale gals, you need this in your life.

Finally is the Illamasqua Cream Blusher in ‘Promise’ which is available here priced at £23.

IMG_1599 (2)

IMG_1611

IMG_1612 (2)

This is such a candy pink blusher, perfect for ALL skintypes, even the darkest of skins. Its beautiful and easy to blend again as its cream. It’s a little bit of a thicker formula opposed to the Lancome Cushion so this definitely needs to be applied before any powder is introduced onto the skin – otherwise it wont sit right and will look awful ‘bitty’ and will sit on top of the skin rather than blend in with the skin.

Please let me know your Top 5 Blushers for summer this year – I’d love to know!

NEW KIT ADDITION: BBU Palette

IMG_1346 (4)

Dun, Dun, Duuuuuuuuuuuunnnnn.

Its here. I caved, I cracked, I crumbled. And I have no regrets, I’m now the proud owner of the Bobbi Brown Universal Palette.

I thought before I dig my fingers  and brushes in, I thought I would share with you, the beautiful pictures of this gorgeous palette.

I know some of you may be reading and be thinking ‘But eh Ruth! When are you really going to use all those colours, you’re a pale gurl…what a waste of money?!’ This lil baby is for my freelance kit, therefore all skin colours are covered, what a dreamy product!
This palette is definitely fitting for the professional make-up artists whom find themselves working on a variety of skin tones on a day to day basis, as ALL skin tones are covered. Those Make-up Artists who travel a lot, this is a dream as its so light and compact, many of my friends who love make-up who don’t necessarily do freelance make-up, have been shocked at the size of the palette, however being a freelancer, this size is perfect! Also this palette is your best friend if your a makeup artist who does a lot of ‘touch ups’ through working on TV, or Editorial shoots.

I’ve been wanting this palette for the last 3 years, but borrowing other peoples BBU Palettes, on recent jobs has definitely firmed up to me that I NEEDED this palette and it was 100% worth the extortionate amount of money it sells for.

What do you guys think of this palette? Is it on your wish list too?

How to: Cheat A Natural Full Brow

Hello!

Just wanted to quickly share a product I live by on photoshoots!

I was introduced to this product by David Horne, @YodaofCosmetics on instagram. David is a hugely talented make-up artist with an array of huge knowledge on makeup and the latest trends, who uses this eyebrow product on himself. As soon as I saw this product I went out to purchase, as I knew it was the product I had always been needing in my kit, but wasn’t sure what it was. I dread the day hearing the words ‘Its been discontinued’.

This product is an absolute life saver and its the Suqqu ‘Liquid Brow Pen’ I have the 01 Moss Green and the 02 Brown.
Both pens are ultra fine, so super easy to use to create natural light feathery full brows. The formula of the pen stays but all day on the skin of the client too, as the formula is oil and water resistant, so can with stand the smudging. However the option is always open to top if necessary.

These pens also are known for having collagen and avocado extract to stimulate hair growth. Perfect to help to cheat your way to a fuller brow or alternatively to fill in any stubble/ facial hairs on guys for photo shoots.

The pens last me a good few months too at £20 a pen, they may seem pricey, but honestly I haven’t found anything on the market this fantastic and natural. Others I’ve come across are either too big of a nip or the colour is too strong and too warm toned. Which ends up over ruling the natural brow and not working to compliment it.

You can grab hold of the SUQQU Pens from Selfridges in the UK or online here: http://www.selfridges.com/GB/en/cat/suqqu-eyebrow-liquid-pen_396-3000994-LIQUIDPEN/?previewAttribute=Moss+green

Hope this has been helpful?
